It had been two years since I had got my certificate (pilots license), and I was thinking a big adventure like Oshkosh may be possible. Somehow, the stars aligned, and Diane and I worked out a plan for me to fly (and work half days), and her and Charles to drive. At the end of the day, we'd meet up and plan the next day.
07:00, 18th July, 2019, Nevada County Airport. I learned to follow Andrew's advice on this trip - leave as early as possible (sunrise or civil twiliight) to ensure the best conditions. My first day, leaving at 07:30, wasn't a great example of this!
Heading East along I-80, looking North over the Sierra. You can see the Sierra Buttes in the background.

Diane and Charles were camping on Antelope Island State Park near Salt Lake City. They were enjoying seeing the bison down there.
White Mountain, part of the Green River Formation. Rock Springs city center is in the background. We're about 15 miles out from KRKS at this point.
08:00 20th July, 2019. Fuel stop at Rock Springs, elevation 6,755'. Nice FBO, and met some nice people flying through. Weather was perfect.
I put the canopy cover on, and it rained hard that night, big thunder storm. We stayed in a hotel in town.
Lounging around in the Cowboy Aviation FBO, waiting for the weather to the East to clear. We had to wait a few hours.
By chance, I ran into this Stearman flying near Kimball, Nebraska. Joined up off his wing for a bit, then turned back on course.
